Murrells Inlet

Murrells Inlet

The seaside community of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina lies 10 miles south of Myrtle Beach and is considered the "Seafood Capital of South Carolina." Part of the popular Grand Strand area, Murrells Inlet is split between Horry and Georgetown Counties and lacks a separate municipal government, making the town a self-governing municipality.

Home to such natural attractions as Brookgreen Gardens and Huntington Beach State Park, the community was officially named Murrells Inlet in 1913. Rice plantations thrived in the area during the early 19th century but after the Civil War, rice farming began to decline and the community transitioned to commercial fishing.

Still considered a fishing village, locals and tourists can find numerous seafood markets and restaurants throughout Murrells Inlet. Fishing charters and ecology tours of the salt marsh leave from the inlet marina on a regular basis. The local community understands the importance of the natural resources surrounding the town and has created a non-profit group, Murrells Inlet 2007, to protect the creek around Murrells Inlet.
