Atlantic Beach

Atlantic Beach

Nicknamed The Black Pearl, Atlantic Beach, South Carolina lies to the north of Myrtle Beach in Horry County and is one of the many beaches that make up part of the Grand Strand.

The town was founded in the 1930's by the Gullah/Geechee people and soon became a popular beach for African-Americans since many beaches along the Atlantic Coast were still segregated. As beach resorts became desegregated along the Atlantic Coast, Atlantic Beach began to lose some of its rich culture. Depsite the town's current misfortunes, Atlantic Beach still has a nice beach area.
